With a girth as large as its name suggests, Big Ass Fans’ Isis Fan took top honors for its efficiency: it can circulate as much air as nine ceiling fans. Made of lightweight aircraft grade aluminum, the fan measures 8 to10ft. in diameter, and can be installed in ceilings 12ft. or higher. This caused some discussion among the judges; Black felt it may not be for everyone, only for large spaces with high ceilings. Jupiter felt it important to highlight a lesser-known product like this, to raise awareness in hopes that the company can expand its line and prosper.

Employing the REgreen principles, Stelmack deconstructed a client’s inefficient kitchen (right) and recycled appliances, countertops, and fixtures; installed counters from remnant soapstone from a local supplier; added energy-saving task and ambient lighting and Energy Star appliances; and reused existing solid wood cabinet boxes, while a local manufacturer made new solid wood door fronts with natural finish. She also refinished the wood floor; refinished and painted trim and woodwork, and used zero- and low-VOC paints, recycled-content wire storage racks, and recycled-content tin tile backsplash.

Miele Ninth Floor
The mantra of residential appliance company Miele, Immer Besser (or Forever Better), especially resonates when it comes to sustainability. All of Miele’s products are Energy Star rated and built to last 20 years, says New York showroom manager Lynn Anne Walsman, and its production facilities surpass even the most rigorous environmental regulations.
Miele’s Manhattan showroom in the A&D Building is fully live, unlike most of the building’s other showrooms, says Walsman. “We welcome clients to come in and try out our appliances. Bring in your own plates and try the dishwasher. Bring in a load of laundry.” The fact that there are no sales representatives in the showroom also adds a comforting element since there is no pressure to buy, adds Walsman.
Some of Miele’s latest offerings include the DG4082 convection steam oven with touch-control pad and food-driven menu system; a new built-in coffee system with smudge-proof Clean Touch Steel and an integrated milk tank; and the LaPerla dishwasher, equipped with auto-close technology and a CleanAir drying system.
