Sustainable Architect Carol J.W. Kurth Elevated to AIA College of Fellows

BEDFORD--Carol J. Weissman Kurth was elevated to The American Institute of Architects (AIA) College of Fellows on Feb. 24. This honor is conferred on licensed architects for significant contributions to architecture and society and for those who have achieved a standard of excellence in the profession. Kurth is one of 104 honorees who will be inducted into the College of Fellows at an investiture ceremony on May 13 at the 2011 National AIA Convention and Design Exposition in New Orleans. The AIA has a membership of 80,000 licensed architects worldwide, and there are fewer than 2,700 members distinguished with the honor of fellowship.

Kurth is an award-winning architect and interior designer, and is principal of The Office of Carol J.W. Kurth, AIA Architect, PC, in Bedford. Her distinguished body of work is notable for its elegant and imaginative integration of materials and landscape within residential and commercial architecture. “I am humbled to receive such prestigious recognition from my peers within the profession," Kurth stated in a release. "As an architect, mentor, and teacher, I am delighted to have the opportunity to engage people -- my clients, my staff and especially my students -- in the creative process and to encourage an understanding that architecture influences our daily lives and that design matters.”

Kurth is an active member of the AIA Westchester and Hudson Valley Chapter and serves on its Board of Directors. She is the founding Chairperson of the Chapter’s AIA Women in Architecture Committee. In addition, Kurth developed “Cans for Kids,” a charitable program benefiting the Chapter’s Design Club, a hands-on educational program for elementary students, for which she is an active teacher and mentor. A graduate of City College of New York (CCNY), Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture, Kurth is President of the Architecture Alumni Association, a visiting design studio juror and a member of Dean Ranalli’s Advisory Council. She also teaches Interior Design at the State University of New York (SUNY) Purchase Continuing Education Program. Additionally, Kurth is an Advisory Board Member with the American Cancer Society’s Eastern Division, and is actively involved with the ASPIRE/WISE High School mentoring programs and the Town of Bedford community.
