Norma Lehmeier Hartie, a graduate of Sarah Lawrence and Parson’s School of Design, is a Feng Shui staging designer who focuses on ecofriendly, sustainable sources. Hartie recommends to her clients no-VOC paint, wood, bamboo or stone flooring and the use of natural and untreated materials. Hartie visits clients' homes and does remote consultations by using video and photographs sent by the client and communicating via phone or computer.
In her own opinion, Hartie’s major impact on green interior design is the education and awareness of green goods through her books. Her first book, Harmonious Environment, was the Grand Prize Winner of Writer’s Digest Book Awards and the Best New Non-Fiction USA National Best Books in 2008.
Hartie is currently working on a living room in New Jersey that needs to be updated to make it functional and more aesthetically pleasing. Hartie also completed a kitchen renovation (see slideshow).
“We still have a long way to go in terms of green fabric, wallpaper, carpets, and furniture, as most of these products out gas harmful pollutants into the air. I believe these harmful products will be largely phased out as demand from consumers grows,” Hartie said of the future of the industry.
